MusicBee uses the same compiler package, "BASS" from un4seen, as BugHead. Sound quality of MusicBee is very nice and my friend says in his rig it is very close or almost the same as MinimServer. But to me these are the main players right now, at least IMO. I am sure I missed some stuff about each product. I was planning on trying out Foobar this weekend. I am also using the ffmpeg with sox and I think I prefer Minimserver. How do like MusicBee in terms of sound quality? I have only compared Minimserver (running on a PC) against JRMC. Great writeup! I used to use MusicBee but have not done so recently. Hopefully Roon will keep on making changes for improvements as it has great promise. MusicBee wins for me based on end user configurability of the interface. (Not Roon until I get the 2012R2 issues resolved)įavorites: MusicBee, MinimServer, HQPlayer for sound quality. Using JPlay or JPLayStreamer with all products.

Issues running on 2012R2 unless you install Server Experience pack and a Microsoft patch.įoobar - Nice sounding, similar interface to MusicBee, boat loads of add-ons, very customizable, free with donations, remote controllable.

Roon - Excellent interface, Metadata galore, find music in your collection based on listening tastes, no player configurations (No Up/down sampling, No DSD support (but it is coming shortly)), This software has great potential though and Roon is listening. No remote.īug Head - Nice sounding, author decides what to support or not (tells people to stop using it - what do you want for free?) - this not for me HQPlayer - Very nice sounding, not a fan of the interface, higher cost compared to other programs, lots of filters/configurations for changing the sound of your playback. MusicBee - Very Nice sounding, similar interface to Foobar, has folder/organization flexibility (I like custom folders), is being supported by author (Free, but donations can be made), minimal DSD support (DSF - songs play downsampled, no DSD Tagging), No remote. Very nice sounding (especially with new ffpmpeg w/sox), support for DSD, no custom folder abilities (all from tags), some reliability issues (stops, lockups) running MinimServer on NAS, JPLayStreamer on MusicServer, with Kazoo on iPad. MinimServer - running on NAS, using JPlayStreamer and Kazoo. JRiver - yep nice punch, but the SSSSS & FFFFF sounds.ugh. This is EXACTLY what I have been talking about with a friend as we compare/use different programs. Minimserver with libsoxr sound very analog and not loosing any details. Jriver is a little bit more punchy but those Sssssss and Fffff when they are singing is just making me crazy. In my system sound is better on minimserver.
On jriver all pcm upsample to 24bit/192kHz. All pcm on minimserver are left without any upsampling of course I use libsoxr on minimserver. Sometimes I imagine that Minimserver has a tad more dynamics, but not so much that I would switch to Minimserver because of a SQ difference. With respect to SQ : I do not really hear a difference between the two servers. This is a question for the Minimserver forum. And I do not understand what the option startupscan really means. 10 minutes! I do not know if I can tell Minimserver to exclude. m3u playlist file (I do not use these anyway). If I look at the log file : it appears to scan my whole NAS collection (25000 tracks) and reports an error for nearly every. It appears as soon as the Minimwatch icon turns to green. Even when I set the startupscan option to false, it takes 8-10 minutes before I can see the server in Kazoo. Yes : I have the Minimserver also on my NUC-I3-W7. What I am curious most about is what your opinion is on sound quality using Minimserver vs Jriver? Its just a service that turns itself on immediately once you start it, much like JRiver so the broadcasting should be quick. What you say about having to wait for Minimserver service to appear on your network is also odd.

Peter, the point you bring up about Minimserver scan time is a legitimate one though to be fair, have you tried installing it on your PC instead of your NAS? That being said, i have read that the dev of Minimserver is working on a new feature to include auto scan for new music.
